Four signs, one clear identity
The academy's building has a tall gable wall and room beside the road for a freestanding sign. We used the gable for the name, logo and slogan, and put an illuminated pylon at the road so drivers find the academy before they reach the entrance.
Painted 30 mm PVC letters for the name
The academy name, GRACIE BARRA, runs across the gable in dimensional letters cut from 30 mm PVC and painted black. The letters are not lit. Their depth casts a shadow on the light grey wall, so you can read the name in daylight from across the lot.
- 30 mm PVC
- Painted black
- Non-illuminated
LED lightboxes for the logo and the slogan
The Gracie Barra logo is round, so a standard rectangular box would have left empty corners around it. We built a circular lightbox with an acrylic face and 12V LED lighting inside, so the logo glows at night and keeps its exact shape.
The slogan, JIU-JITSU • SELF DEFENSE, sits in its own rectangular lightbox with rounded ends: a black face with white lettering, lit from inside with 12V LED modules. The face comes off, so a technician can reach the LEDs for service without taking the cabinet off the wall.
- Acrylic faces
- 12V LED modules
- Custom circular shape
- Serviceable face
A double-sided illuminated pylon sign
Drivers see the pylon before they see the building. We built it with an aluminum cabinet on two posts and acrylic faces on both sides, lit from inside with 12V LED. Each face carries the Gracie Barra logo with "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Stittsville, Ontario", so traffic from either direction knows what the building is and where it is.
- Aluminum structure
- Acrylic faces
- Double-sided
- Internal 12V LED
The City of Ottawa sign permit
Stittsville is part of the City of Ottawa, so a pylon sign and illuminated wall signs there need a sign permit under the City's sign by-law. We prepared and submitted the permit for Gracie Barra, then installed once the City approved it.

Common questions
Do I need a permit for a pylon sign in Stittsville?
Yes. Stittsville is inside the City of Ottawa, and the City requires a sign permit for most exterior signs, including pylon signs and illuminated wall signs. DSign LED prepares and submits the permit for you. See our Ottawa sign permit guide.
What is the difference between a lightbox and PVC letters?
A lightbox is a cabinet with a translucent acrylic face and LED lighting inside, so it glows at night. PVC letters are solid dimensional letters mounted on the wall, and they are not lit. Many businesses combine both, as Gracie Barra did: PVC letters for the name and lightboxes for the logo and slogan.
Can a lightbox follow the shape of my logo?
Yes. We built a circular lightbox for the Gracie Barra logo, and we can shape a lightbox to follow round or irregular logos instead of forcing them into a rectangle.
